RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Engineers at IBM and Boeing have suggested that quantum computing could play a significant role in advancing the fight against corrosion.

By leveraging Boeing’s expertise in corrosion engineering and IBM’s quantum computing capabilities, researchers have developed two innovative techniques for conducting quantum simulations of the water reduction process, a crucial step in corrosion. Quantum computation, with its ability to model quantum-scale systems effectively, allowed the researchers to compute the energies involved in the water reduction reaction more accurately than traditional classical methods.

The researchers have also introduced a novel method for simplifying quantum circuits, which reduces the quantum resources needed for their simulations. They believe that this circuit simplification technique could have broader applications beyond their specific experiments.
