Telecom industry org publishes network energy efficiency roadmap

Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) recently released a new publication titled “Green Future Networks: A Roadmap to Energy Efficient Networks.” This roadmap provides valuable insights and recommendations on how mobile networks can reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency. The document presents 16 energy-saving techniques and intelligent solutions that are currently in use or in development within the industry. It also emphasizes the potential impact of these solutions on energy consumption and categorizes them based on type and development time.

The publication highlights the importance of process optimization, engineering advancements, operational improvements, and the integration of new technologies in reducing energy consumption. It builds upon NGMN’s Green Future Networks program by introducing long-term solutions that mobile network operators (MNOs) can implement. One key innovation mentioned in the publication is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to optimize network planning and management, predict traffic patterns, and make informed energy-saving decisions.

NGMN encourages MNOs to collaborate on sharing wireless and RAN infrastructure to minimize energy usage and carbon emissions. The document also suggests closer collaboration between standards development organizations and energy suppliers to reduce carbon footprints and costs while ensuring service reliability. The publication was developed with input from various industry stakeholders, including operators, vendors, and research institutes, and NGMN invites all parties in the value chain to join the Alliance in promoting Green Future Networks.
