AWS is making waves in Georgia with a plan to invest approximately $11 billion in constructing new data centers. This latest investment in Georgia is part of a larger trend for AWS, with Amazon, its parent company, having already invested $18.5 billion in the state since 2010. The focus of this new venture will be on Butts and Douglas Counties, presenting a substantial boost for the local economy.
Local leaders in the respective counties are enthusiastic about the potential benefits. Dr. Romona Jackson Jones, chairwoman of the Douglas County Commission, described it as a “historic day” for the county, welcoming the advanced cloud computing technology and the prospect of hundreds of high-tech jobs that will contribute to the community. In Butts County, Russ Crumbley, chairman of the Board of Commissioners, lauded the investment as the largest in the county’s history, highlighting the collaboration between local authorities and organizations to ensure that the project enhances infrastructure and drives economic growth.
AWS has been laying the groundwork for its investment, including the acquisition of 118 acres in Douglas County for $37 million and an earlier purchase of 430 acres in Covington. The company also recently launched a cloud Local Zone in Atlanta to provide low-latency solutions for businesses in need of real-time responses.
As AWS solidifies its presence in Georgia, the state is emerging as a hub for cloud infrastructure and AI development. With other tech giants like Microsoft and Google also eyeing the region for data center projects, Atlanta is quickly becoming a focal point for data center development.
