Ethereum Layer 2s Surge Past 10M Active Addresses, Transaction Volume Hits 5.19x Mainnet Levels

Ethereum Layer 2 solutions are starting off 2025 with impressive momentum, as the number of weekly active addresses reaches 10.18 million.

This current figure represents a 6.84% increase from the previous week, showcasing a significant surge in Layer 2 engagement nearing its peak, reflecting the increasing adoption of these scaling solutions.

Based on data from GrowThePie.xyz, Layer 2 platforms are now processing 5.19 times the transaction volume of the Ethereum mainnet.

Ethereum L2s Leading the Activity Ranking

Leading the charge among Ethereum Layer 2 solutions are Base blockchain by Coinbase, Arbitrum, Taiko, and Optimism.

Arbitrum takes the lead in total value locked (TVL) with $18.45 billion, followed closely by Base network with $14.49 billion TVL, and Optimism ranking third with $7.41 billion TVL.

When it comes to transaction count, Base leads with 10.84 million transactions, followed by Arbitrum with 2.2 million yearly transactions. Arbitrum trails significantly behind Base by approximately 8 million transactions.

The substantial transaction counts on both networks are reflected in their revenue figures, with Arbitrum’s yearly revenue at $62,970 and Base’s significantly higher at $603,510.

Additionally, Base leads in active addresses with 793,550, while Arbitrum follows with 334,970 active addresses.

The consistent growth in Layer 2 activity, particularly since mid-2023, underscores their crucial role in scaling Ethereum to meet increasing demand. Users are increasingly utilizing these solutions for DeFi applications, NFT trading, and other on-chain activities without the high costs traditionally associated with Ethereum’s mainchain.

Despite its relatively low fee of $0.013, Base ranks 16th in transaction fees, with other platforms offering even lower transaction costs.

In the past week, the total number of addresses interacting with multiple Layer 2 chains slightly decreased by 19.81% compared to the previous week.
