A recent global survey conducted by Recon Analytics, on behalf of Seagate Technology, offers intriguing insights into the future of AI and data storage.
Business leaders across 15 different industries in 10 countries are preparing for a surge in data volume as AI adoption continues to rise. Many anticipate that cloud-based storage will play a central role in data repositories moving forward.
Why the focus on cloud storage? It’s a cost-effective solution, particularly with hard drives providing scalability at competitive terabyte-per-dollar efficiencies. According to IDC, 89% of data stored by major cloud service providers is stored on hard drives.
The survey reveals that nearly two-thirds (61%) of companies utilizing cloud storage as their primary method expect their storage needs to more than double in the next three years. Singaporean businesses, though slightly more conservative, also anticipate significant growth, with 53% projecting similar storage expansions.
Roger Entner, the founder and lead analyst at Recon Analytics, succinctly summarized the findings: “The survey results indicate a forthcoming surge in demand for data storage, with hard drives emerging as the preferred choice. As business leaders plan to store more AI-driven data in the cloud, it appears that cloud services are well-poised to experience a second wave of growth.”
Key Takeaways:
- AI adoption is widespread but varies by region – 62% of Singaporean businesses currently use AI, compared to 72% globally.
- Within the realm of cloud storage users, 53% in Singapore predict a 100%+ growth in storage needs over the next three years, slightly below the global average of 61%.
- Storage ranks as the second most crucial component for AI infrastructure globally, just behind security. The complete ranking includes: Security, storage, data management, network capacity, compute, regulations, LLM viability, and energy.
- Extending data retention is deemed critical for achieving better AI outcomes – 85% of Singaporean businesses and 90% globally concur.
- Establishing trustworthy AI is a top priority, with 88% of AI users acknowledging the necessity of storing more data for extended periods to achieve it.
The survey findings underscore a prevailing trend: organizations are prolonging the retention of data to ensure its reliability for training AI models. The quest for precise results and improved outcomes is fueling the demand for innovative storage solutions.
BS Teh, Seagate’s chief commercial officer, added his perspective: “Trustworthy AI is the linchpin for widespread AI adoption. With the majority of survey respondents emphasizing the need for lengthier data storage to enhance the quality of AI outcomes, we are concentrating on real density innovation to boost storage capacity for each platter in our HAMR-based hard drives. We have a clear roadmap to more than double per-platter storage capacity in the coming years.”
As AI continues to advance, one thing remains evident: businesses will require smarter, more efficient storage solutions to accommodate the vast amounts of data it generates.
