AWS strengthens partnership with Australia with new cloud deal

AWS has deepened its collaboration with the Australian Government’s Digital Transformation Agency (DTA), solidifying their partnership with a new Whole-of-Government agreement. This agreement, set for an initial three-year term, builds on a previous deal from 2019, making it easier for government agencies to leverage cloud and emerging technologies. The new agreement expands access to advanced technologies like quantum computing and streamlines procurement processes, providing a pre-negotiated contracting framework to save time and resources for government agencies.

One of the key benefits of this agreement is the emphasis on upskilling public sector teams in cloud and digital solutions, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary expertise to capitalize on new innovations. DTA CEO Chris Fechner highlighted the impact of this collaboration, noting that over 140 government agencies already rely on AWS for service delivery. The new agreement is expected to drive better contract performance, vendor accountability, and maximize value.

A significant upgrade in this agreement is the broader access to the AWS Partner Network and AWS Marketplace, enabling government agencies to explore a variety of cloud solutions and enhance service delivery through innovation. With over 240 AWS services at their disposal, including cutting-edge AI, security, and quantum technologies, agencies have a wealth of tools to accelerate their digital transformation.

AWS has been a key player in Australia’s digital infrastructure since 2012, with substantial investments in building and operating the AWS Asia-Pacific (Sydney) Region. The company plans to invest an additional A$13.2 billion in Sydney and Melbourne by 2027 to further expand its infrastructure. Louise Stigwood, AWS Public Sector managing director for Australia and New Zealand, emphasized the company’s commitment to enabling faster delivery of citizen-centric services through leading AI, security, and quantum technologies.

Security remains a top priority in this partnership, with AWS meeting the highest security standards as a certified Strategic Hosting Provider under the Australian Government’s Hosting Certification Framework. The company has made significant investments in personnel, processes, and technology to safeguard sensitive government data. With this strengthened partnership, AWS and the Australian Government are paving the way for a more agile, secure, and innovative digital future.
