European cloud company evroc is set to elevate Europe’s position in artificial intelligence by constructing a 96 MW data center in Mougins, France, specifically designed for AI workloads. The project is scheduled for completion by 2025, with the facility’s capacity expanding gradually over time.
Dubbed an “AI factory” by evroc, the data center stands out from traditional data centers due to its meticulous attention to detail. AI is seamlessly integrated into every aspect of operations, from hardware orchestration to developer tools. The systems are optimized to handle large-scale AI tasks, aiming to enhance performance, efficiency, and speed.
Sustainability is a key focus as well. AI will play a crucial role in managing cooling, resource allocation, and heat reuse to minimize the environmental impact. The objective is to establish a hub that drives AI innovation while keeping energy consumption at a minimum.
The choice of Mougins as the data center location was influenced by the thriving community of engineers, startups, and R&D teams in the nearby Sophia Antipolis tech hub, also known as the “French Silicon Valley.” This strategic positioning enables evroc to recruit highly skilled personnel and foster AI innovation effectively.
evroc’s founder and CEO, Mattias Astrom, views the move as more than just infrastructure development. He sees France as a central hub for AI research and innovation, emphasizing the company’s commitment to local technology and talent. The establishment of the European cloud represents a significant investment in infrastructure and a dedication to advancing Europe’s AI ecosystem.
Looking ahead, evroc has ambitious expansion plans beyond Mougins. The company is gearing up to build two additional 100+ MW data center sites in France, with groundwork expected to commence this year. These sites will collectively form a comprehensive European cloud network. evroc is also planning to expand its offices in Sophia Antipolis, creating a specialized team focused on AI, cloud engineering, and data center operations.
In addition to technological advancements, evroc’s objectives encompass control and sovereignty. With European companies heavily relying on cloud services from US tech giants, evroc aims to provide cloud infrastructure that complies with EU privacy laws. This initiative aims to empower European businesses with cloud solutions that are developed and hosted in Europe, ensuring data sovereignty and security.
evroc’s strategic move aligns with broader shifts in Europe, where policymakers and businesses are prioritizing EU-compliant cloud solutions amid data privacy concerns. Geopolitical tensions have further underscored the importance of establishing secure digital infrastructure within Europe. By capitalizing on the AI boom and the growing demand for European cloud alternatives, evroc is positioned to thrive in the evolving landscape.
