StarHub trials Southeast Asian 5G cloud RAN with Nokia and Dell

StarHub, in partnership with Nokia and Dell, has successfully conducted a trial of Southeast Asia’s inaugural 5G cloud radio access network (cloud RAN). This trial is a part of StarHub’s Cloud Infinity initiative, which aims to bolster enterprises’ digital transformation efforts.

Cloud RAN plays a crucial role in the advancement of mobile network infrastructure by accommodating dynamic network demands. By transitioning to a cloud-based architecture, mobile operators can enhance resource allocation efficiency and scalability.

The trial showcased the cloud RAN’s ability to handle enterprise use cases such as ultra-low latency applications, time-based service provisioning, and variable throughput services. It also illustrated how cloud RAN could enable new enterprise offerings and create additional business opportunities.

During the trial, Nokia’s commercial 5G cloud RAN solution was utilized to establish carrier-grade calls. This setup seamlessly integrated with existing RAN systems and various server and cloud platforms. Dell contributed the underlying hardware through PowerEdge XR8620 servers, while Nokia’s MantaRay NM managed network tasks between the cloud and traditional RAN setups.

Additionally, the trial incorporated Red Hat OpenShift, a Kubernetes-powered hybrid cloud platform, to support the deployment of cloud-native RAN functions.

Ayush Sharma, StarHub’s chief technology officer, emphasized that implementing cloud RAN aims to enhance network performance and prepare the telco for upcoming technologies. He highlighted that Cloud Infinity is a pivotal step in delivering cloud-native services.

Sharma explained that Cloud Infinity was developed to enable a multitude of digital platforms and services for StarHub and its customers. He stressed the need to move away from traditional approaches in a saturated market, leading to the transformation into a hybrid multicloud company.

The multi-tenancy design of Cloud Infinity has allowed StarHub to collaborate with enterprise clients across various industries. Notably, a major financial institution leverages Cloud Infinity for low-latency connectivity, enhanced cybersecurity, and improved observability.

Cloud Infinity is positioned to address the growing demand for sovereign cloud services in Southeast Asia, particularly among government agencies and highly-regulated sectors. Features like enhanced encryption and quantum-safe technologies are being incorporated to meet specific sector requirements.

As part of its regional strategy, StarHub is exploring ways to maximize its terrestrial, subsea, and satellite infrastructure to expand service availability.
