XRP outperforms market as Coinbase seeks CFTC approval for futures trading

Coinbase Derivatives is making strides in expanding its crypto offerings with a recent filing with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to introduce an XRP futures contract.

If approved by the CFTC, trading could commence as early as April 21, 2025.

Coinbase Institutional has proposed self-certifying the product, which would provide investors with a regulated and capital-efficient method to gain exposure to XRP through derivatives.

This move could potentially increase institutional involvement and enhance the legitimacy of XRP within traditional financial circles.

XRP has emerged as the top-performing cryptocurrency among the top 10 in the last 24 hours, gaining over 2% despite overall market weakness. This positive sentiment is likely linked to the futures filing.

XRP ETF?

The filing comes amidst growing speculation about the possibility of a spot XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF).

Market analysts point out that Bitcoin and Ethereum secured ETF approvals only after the maturity of their respective futures markets. These futures products helped address regulatory concerns, particularly regarding market manipulation and price discovery.

The launch of XRP futures could play a similar role, offering the SEC a proven framework for approving an XRP spot ETF. This development is significant following Ripple’s recent settlement with the SEC, which resolved a lengthy legal dispute over XRP’s classification.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse confirmed the settlement last month, marking a milestone in achieving regulatory clarity for XRP. This has shifted industry sentiment, with multiple firms gearing up for an anticipated ETF launch.

Nate Geraci, president of The ETF Store, recently noted that the path to an XRP ETF now hinges more on timing than regulatory obstacles.

At least nine asset managers, including 21Shares, Bitwise, CoinShares, Franklin Templeton, WisdomTree, and Canary Capital, have expressed interest in offering XRP ETFs.
