Deutsche Telekom and Google Cloud have decided to extend their partnership until the end of the decade, with a focus on deepening their collaboration in cloud migration and AI technologies.
Under the new agreement, Google Cloud will become Deutsche Telekom’s preferred partner for transitioning key business operations to the cloud. This will involve significant work on the One Data Ecosystem (ODE), a platform designed to consolidate the company’s existing on-premises data systems and integrate AI capabilities into its infrastructure.
Deutsche Telekom is also planning to leverage Google’s Vertex AI platform to enhance and scale Gemini-based applications. By gaining improved access to computing resources, the company aims to better address customer needs in a more timely manner.
Stefan Schloter, CIO Europe at Deutsche Telekom, emphasized the company’s shift towards an “AI-first” strategy, with a strong emphasis on enhancing agility and digital services across software engineering and customer interfaces. He highlighted the migration of Deutsche Telekom’s core SAP systems to Google Cloud and the integration of the Gemini Multimodal Live API into the MyMagenta app as key milestones in the partnership.
Marianne Janik, VP for EMEA North at Google Cloud, noted the increasing role of cloud technology in driving innovation and service development for communication service providers. She expressed Google Cloud’s commitment to collaborating with Deutsche Telekom in developing new customer-facing services.
Notably, the two companies have previously collaborated on the launch of a sovereign cloud offering in Germany in 2021. This offering included a “Supervised Cloud” operated by T-Systems and a “Hosted Cloud” based on Google Distributed Cloud, catering to customers with stringent sovereignty requirements.
In a recent development, Deutsche Telekom announced that it would host its 5G core on Google Cloud in 2022, with deployment managed by T-Systems in Germany. T-Systems currently operates 16 data centers across the country and plans to expand with five additional sites by late 2024.
Google Cloud has also expanded its infrastructure in Germany, launching regions in Frankfurt and Berlin in 2017 and 2023, respectively. In late 2024, the company introduced sovereign storage options in collaboration with StackIT.
Besides Deutsche Telekom, Google Cloud is also working with other telecom providers like Orange and DNA (part of the Telenor Group) to drive innovation in the industry.
