4chan Is Back Online After Cyberattack, But With Issues

The popular imageboard website, 4chan, has finally come back online after a prolonged outage caused by a cyberattack. Despite resuming its services, the platform has acknowledged the significant impact of the incident.

4chan Returns After Cyberattack

In a recent blog post, 4chan announced its return following a severe cyberattack that forced the platform offline for nearly two weeks. The post detailed the challenges faced during the outage and the efforts made to restore normal operations.

The cyberattack on 4chan earlier this month resulted in the leakage of the platform’s source code and other critical information. The compromised details were reportedly shared on a rival forum, tarnishing 4chan’s reputation.

Initially, the specifics of the attack were unclear, leading to speculation among users and security experts. Some suggested that outdated PHP versions may have contributed to the breach. Additionally, reports surfaced about the platform using outdated infrastructure, exacerbating the damage caused by the cyberattack.

Journalist Alex Goldman revealed that the leaked information included IP addresses associated with 4chan posts and moderator identities.

“So 4chan (the anonymous message board) was hacked. The hackers leaked the source code for the site and claim to have the IP addresses behind every post, the identities of all moderators. And it seems it got hacked because it was running on software that was a decade out of date.”

Another user on X shared additional details that were compromised during the attack, such as email addresses.

Following the incident, 4chan remained offline for approximately two weeks before making a comeback. In their latest update, the platform confirmed its return while working on restoring its infrastructure. However, they announced certain changes, including the temporary disabling of PDF uploads and the permanent closure of the “/f/ – Flash” board for security reasons.

PDF uploads have been temporarily disabled on boards that supported them, but they will return soon. However, the “/f/ – Flash” board will not be reinstated due to security concerns related to .swf files.

Insufficient Updates Contributed to the Attack – 4chan Admits

Although 4chan has resumed operations, the exact cause of the cyberattack remains unconfirmed. Nevertheless, the platform has been transparent about the challenges faced and the steps taken to restore services.

4chan acknowledged running outdated servers and cited financial constraints as hindrances to upgrading their infrastructure. They indirectly confirmed suspicions about outdated codes and servers being exploited in the attack.

Despite these challenges, 4chan assured users that they had updated their infrastructure during the downtime.

“We have not been idle during our nearly two weeks of downtime. The breached server has been replaced, and the operating system and code have been updated to the latest versions.”

Additionally, the platform announced the recruitment of more volunteers to assist in managing their services.

“4chan is back. No other website can replace it or this community. Despite the difficulties, we are determined to persevere.”
