Microsoft has officially opened its first cloud region in Malaysia, known as Malaysia West. Situated in Greater Kuala Lumpur, this new region features three availability zones and offers cloud services to cater to local data storage requirements.
This launch enables Malaysian organizations to access Microsoft’s services, including Azure and Microsoft 365, along with tools for computing, storage, cybersecurity, and data analytics. The region is poised to enhance user experience by reducing latency and improving performance for individuals in the country.
YB Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, emphasized that the launch aligns with the government’s objective of leveraging digital and AI tools to elevate the country’s position in the value chain. Microsoft’s cloud region is envisioned to establish a robust digital ecosystem for local businesses in accordance with the company’s cloud principles.
Scott Guthrie, leading Microsoft’s Cloud and AI division, highlighted that the cloud region is tailored to support Malaysia’s AI initiatives and equip organizations with the resources to construct more secure systems.
Various companies, such as PETRONAS, FinHero, SCICOM Berhad, Senang, SIRIM Berhad, TNG Digital, and Veeam, have already started utilizing the new infrastructure. Microsoft anticipates a surge in demand for local cloud services, prompting more organizations to join the platform.
According to IDC estimates, the region has the potential to generate approximately US$10.9 billion over the next four years, with 17% of the revenue expected to originate from the Malaysia West region. Additionally, IDC projects the creation of over 37,000 new jobs, including nearly 6,000 skilled IT positions.
Furthermore, Microsoft introduced the BINA AI Malaysia program during its AI Tour event in Kuala Lumpur, aimed at bolstering local AI development. The company plans to establish a National AI Innovation Centre in Malaysia to enhance AI strategies, develop tools, and nurture talent for future roles.
In a bid to cultivate Malaysia’s AI workforce, Microsoft launched the AIForMYFuture initiative in December 2024. The program aims to train 800,000 individuals in AI-related skills by the end of 2025, with 400,000 participants already receiving training. Microsoft is collaborating with various local organizations and training providers to reach a diverse audience and prepare them for opportunities in the AI sector.
Laurence Si, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia, emphasized that the cloud region offers customers access to local infrastructure, while the skills program aims to equip more Malaysians for roles in the AI industry.
