Rubrik is enhancing its backup software to encompass a wider range of cloud databases and Oracle Cloud services, as reported by TechTarget. These updates were unveiled during the annual Rubrik Forward event, which took place virtually.
In the upcoming months, Rubrik’s platform is set to extend its support to managed relational databases like AWS RDS and Microsoft Azure SQL. Furthermore, it aims to include coverage for MySQL, AWS Aurora, Oracle, and other engines in the future. The roadmap also includes protection for non-relational databases such as AWS DynamoDB and Azure Cosmos DB.
Additionally, new tools specifically designed for Oracle Cloud are part of the expansion. These tools will provide protection for Oracle Cloud databases and the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. Rubrik also plans to introduce support for orchestrated recovery on Azure virtual machines.
While Rubrik is predominantly recognized for its backup and recovery solutions, the company is now placing a stronger emphasis on cybersecurity. This shift was evident in various keynotes and sessions during the event.
CEO and co-founder Bipul Sinha highlighted that recovery is not merely a last resort but an integral component of modern security. He cautioned that many organizations may already have intruders lurking in their systems, poised to strike. Sinha emphasized that having clean recovery points is one of the most reliable ways to combat these threats.
Analyst Krista Case from The Futurum Group noted that more organizations are realizing the interconnectedness of backup and security. As data increasingly transitions to the cloud, the risks escalate, blurring the lines between backup and security.
Furthermore, relational databases, like the ones now supported by Rubrik, are often prime targets for cyber attacks due to the sensitive information they store. These systems, operating on standard query languages like SQL, are familiar territory for malicious actors.
Non-relational databases face distinct risks stemming from poor configuration, weak encryption, and excessive user access. These vulnerabilities create multiple entry points for attackers.
Rubrik is not the sole vendor honing in on cloud data protection. Druva recently introduced backup services for Azure SQL and Azure Blob Storage. Commvault also announced its forthcoming protection for virtual machines on Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization.
Cybersecurity took center stage at Rubrik’s virtual conference, with several sessions dedicated to defense strategies. Notable speakers included Ron Ross, formerly of NIST, and Rob Joyce, a former cybersecurity director at the NSA.
Both Ross and Joyce emphasized the importance of getting the basics right in cybersecurity practices, such as keeping software updated, monitoring devices, and managing access control. They also stressed the need to proactively prepare for intrusions.
