OVHcloud has recently launched an updated version of its Environmental Impact Tracker, a tool that helps users measure the emissions associated with their cloud usage. This new version expands on the original carbon calculator by including more cloud services and moving towards broader environmental metrics beyond just carbon output.
Initially, the tracker is compatible with Baremetal, Hosted Private Cloud, and Public Cloud Compute products, with support for Public Cloud Storage and Web Hosting expected soon. OVHcloud has improved the tool’s accuracy by accounting for differences in service usage and infrastructure types.
The tracker now covers emissions across all three scopes, from manufacturing to daily operation, including lifecycle data related to energy use and hardware production. A third-party review by IJO, a digital responsibility firm, confirmed the tracker’s transparency and alignment with current practices.
New features in this version include more location-specific reporting by combining country-level averages with supplier-specific electricity data. It also provides details on emissions from reused or refurbished hardware, breaking down how component reconditioning impacts the overall footprint.
Future updates will introduce additional environmental indicators such as water use, land impact, and resource consumption, offering users a more comprehensive view of their infrastructure’s impact. These updates aim to provide users with more data to evaluate the environmental cost of their infrastructure and potentially adjust how they manage workloads.
OVHcloud’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated through efforts to offer measurable data on environmental performance. The company has been ranked in the top 16% of companies in its sector by S&P Global Ratings for criteria like energy use and environmental policies. OVHcloud’s self-designed data centres and servers, along with water-cooling systems, contribute to lower power and water usage scores compared to industry averages.
Grégory Lebourg, Global Environmental Director at OVHcloud, emphasized the importance of tracking infrastructure emissions and supporting customers in understanding and managing their impact. More updates, including additional metrics and cloud products support, are expected in the coming months.
