UK watchdog flags Microsoft and Amazon for stifling cloud competition

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) of the UK is targeting Microsoft and Amazon for their alleged anti-competitive practices in the cloud computing industry. The CMA claims that both companies have established dominant positions in cloud infrastructure, allowing them to control pricing and limit choices for businesses. The agency is seeking a more in-depth investigation under the UK’s new tech regulations.

According to the CMA, Microsoft and Amazon have been able to generate significant profits beyond their infrastructure costs, making it challenging for customers to switch providers. The agency highlighted concerns about practices such as egress fees and licensing restrictions that create a “lock-in” effect, keeping customers tied to these providers.

Microsoft has refuted the CMA’s claims, emphasizing the competitive nature of the cloud industry and the rapid advancements in AI tools. Amazon also disagreed with the findings, warning that additional probes could deter global businesses from investing in the UK.

In contrast, Google supported the CMA’s actions, suggesting that it could lead to better pricing and more choices for UK companies. The CMA specifically pointed out Microsoft’s licensing setup, which favors its own Azure platform over competitors, limiting alternatives and reducing competition.

Currently, Microsoft and Amazon hold a significant share of the infrastructure-as-a-service market, with Google trailing behind. The CMA is recommending a full investigation under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act to prevent tech giants from abusing their market power.

This move aligns with similar efforts in the EU to regulate dominant tech platforms and promote fair competition. The decision to proceed with the probe now rests with the UK government.
