Meta strikes $10 billion cloud deal with Google to support AI growth

A new era of artificial intelligence is upon us, with Meta making a significant investment in Google’s cloud services. Reports suggest that Meta is set to spend over $10 billion on Google’s infrastructure over the next six years, making it one of the largest agreements in Google Cloud’s history.

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has been vocal about his AI ambitions, aiming to develop “personal superintelligence for everyone in the world.” This vision has led Meta to pour billions into AI projects like its Llama family of AI models and new features across its social platforms.

The recent deal underscores the critical role AI plays in Meta’s future, as the company ramps up its AI-related investments. Meta’s second-quarter results were strong, leading to a sharp increase in capital expenditures, with a significant portion allocated to AI initiatives. Looking ahead, Meta anticipates spending between $66 billion and $72 billion by 2025, with even higher costs projected for 2026.

On the other side, Google is actively pursuing cloud growth, aiming to compete with industry giants like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. The recent agreement with Meta is part of Google’s strategy to secure large cloud contracts and close the gap with its competitors.

Despite their rivalry in online advertising, Meta and Google are joining forces in the AI space. Meta’s increasing need for computing power to support its AI projects has led it to partner with Google, Amazon, and Microsoft for infrastructure services. This collaboration highlights how AI demands are reshaping traditional industry rivalries.

As Meta deepens its reliance on external providers for AI infrastructure, questions about the enormous costs of its AI ambitions have started to emerge. Nonetheless, Zuckerberg remains committed to making AI accessible to billions of users, setting the stage for a transformative decade in AI development.
