Oracle details UK investment with sovereign cloud and AI plans

Oracle has revealed new information about its investment program in the UK, initially announced in March, which will include AI services and a sovereign cloud platform.

Back in March, Oracle committed $5 billion to expand Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in the UK and to support government initiatives around AI adoption. The latest update showcases advancements on a sovereign cloud offering specifically tailored for government and defence users. This offering includes services such as generative AI and the OCI AI Agent Platform.

The sovereign cloud aims to provide the UK, US, and NATO with a shared, secure platform that ensures data compliance with national and international regulations. This move will enable sensitive workloads to operate at scale without compromising security or control. The announcement coincided with US President Donald Trump’s visit to the UK, during which several American technology companies made new commitments to the country.

Oracle CEO Safra Catz emphasized the importance of strengthening peace and security through increased defence investments by allied nations. She stated, “Oracle is proud to deliver advanced cloud and AI infrastructure to support the important missions of government and defence organizations in the UK and NATO member states throughout Europe.”

UK technology minister Kanishka Narayan highlighted the investment’s alignment with national security priorities, stating, “Protecting its citizens is the most important job of any government. The investment by Oracle is helping us ensure we can continue to safeguard our national security in an increasingly uncertain world.”

The update also includes Oracle’s recent agreement with NATO’s Communications and Information Agency (NCIA), which involves transitioning mission-critical workloads from on-premise systems to OCI’s sovereign cloud. This migration will enable the NCIA to manage, analyze, and protect their data while maintaining control and peace of mind over data storage and workload operations.

Furthermore, Oracle’s UK initiative signifies its deepening collaboration with OpenAI. Reports suggest a significant five-year deal between the two companies, though not officially confirmed. The investment aligns with a broader trend of US technology companies making substantial investments in the UK, coinciding with President Trump’s visit. Microsoft, CoreWeave, and Google are among the firms that have announced significant investments in AI infrastructure and data centre expansion.
