LTE Cat 4 modem supports reliable industrial connectivity

Digi International has unveiled a cutting-edge LTE Cat 4 cellular modem tailored to enhance connectivity options for industrial and commercial Internet of Things (IoT) systems. This modem is ideal for high-bandwidth applications like digital signage, energy and utility monitoring, fleet systems, industrial equipment, and agricultural networks.

The modem seamlessly integrates with the established XBee form factor, enabling designers to leverage existing hardware across various cellular technologies, including LTE Cat 4 and low-power LTE-M/NB-IoT, without the need for device redesign. With global carrier and regulatory certifications, the integration process is simplified, reducing time and effort required to launch products to market.

Designed for consistent performance across diverse environments, the module features LTE Cat 4 connectivity with automatic 2G and 3G fallback for continuous network availability. It also includes a GNSS receiver for geolocation and asset tracking, Bluetooth Low Energy for local sensor connections, and supports SPI, UART, and USB interfaces for seamless integration into host systems.

An onboard MicroPython environment empowers developers to embed custom logic directly on the module, facilitating localized data processing and decision-making. This minimizes the need for external controllers while enabling cloud integration with platforms like AWS IoT and Microsoft Azure IoT. Local I/O access and Bluetooth communication support responsive, edge-level operations that streamline system design and reduce hardware complexity.

Remote device management is facilitated through Digi Remote Manager, a platform offering centralized monitoring, diagnostics, and over-the-air updates for large deployments. Additionally, the Digi XBee Studio software provides configuration and control tools for both local and remote modules, enhancing engineering efficiency in managing connected devices.

Security features are intricately woven into the design to safeguard against unauthorized access and uphold data integrity. Together, these capabilities lay a solid foundation for developing connected systems that operate reliably and can be managed at scale.

The LTE Cat 4 modules are now available through authorized distributors and come with an activated SIM option. Users can also access a trial of Digi Remote Manager for evaluation and deployment planning.
