Radiation-tolerant transceiver supports high-speed data in space systems

Microchip Technology has unveiled the innovative ATA6571RT CAN FD transceiver, designed specifically for space systems. This radiation-tolerant communication interface supports data rates up to 5 Mbps, a significant improvement from the traditional 1 Mbps CAN interfaces commonly used in spacecraft networks. The enhanced design allows for quicker data transmission and increased payload capacity, ultimately boosting overall bus efficiency while maintaining compatibility with existing CAN systems.

Featuring support for payloads up to 64 bytes per frame, the transceiver facilitates more efficient data handling in satellite and spacecraft architectures. Additionally, it includes a Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) for enhanced error detection and reliability in safety-critical applications. Ideal for use in propulsion control, platform data management, robotics, and sensor networks, the device is a versatile solution for various space system needs.

The ATA6571RT is engineered to withstand the harsh environmental conditions of space, offering resistance to Single-Event Effects (SEE) and Total Ionizing Dose (TID) to ensure consistent performance even under radiation exposure. With added protection features such as short-circuit and overtemperature safeguards, as well as power management capabilities for local and remote wake-up functions, the transceiver guarantees reliable operation in challenging space environments.

Designed for seamless integration at the board level, the ATA6571RT maintains pin compatibility with commercial and ceramic versions, simplifying layout reuse across different product types. This supports scalable designs that can be easily adapted for both prototype and flight-qualified systems.

Expanding the range of radiation-tolerant communication interfaces available for space missions, the ATA6571RT complements existing solutions like Ethernet, MIL-STD-1553, and SpaceWire. Available in 10-unit quantities at $210 per unit, this transceiver offers a cost-effective and reliable communication solution for space applications.
