STMicroelectronics has recently unveiled two brand new ST87M01 NB-IoT wireless modules along with an enhanced development ecosystem that aims to simplify the creation of smart IoT solutions using narrowband cellular connectivity. These modules are ideal for various applications such as smart logistics, environmental monitoring, smart lighting, smart parking, industrial condition monitoring, livestock and pet tracking, alarms, and remote healthcare.
The two newly introduced modules are the ST87M01-1001, which supports NB-IoT narrowband cellular data connectivity, and the ST87M01-1301, which incorporates GNSS and Wi-Fi positioning capabilities for both outdoor and indoor geolocation. Additionally, the EVKITST87M01-2 evaluation kit serves as a comprehensive development platform equipped with a pre-configured Conexa IoT SIM card and two SMA antennas, enabling prototyping and testing of NB-IoT connectivity in real-world scenarios. ST’s expanded ecosystem also includes the “Easy-Connect” software library along with various design examples.
The “Easy-Connect” library from ST aids developers in effectively communicating with the module, configuring and utilizing the NB-IoT, GNSS, and Wi-Fi functionalities, and exchanging data with the cellular network using a C-like, hardware agnostic, and OS independent platform. The IoT SIM card offers 50MB of data, valid for 6 months post user activation, through the Conexa network managed by ST Authorized Partner Wireless Logic. Conexa extends support for NB-IoT connectivity across multiple international markets, with this SIM specifically configured for use in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).
For expedited deployment of ready-to-use solutions, customers can opt for specialized support from ST Authorized Partners like Ignion and DAOS.
Ignion’s Virtual Antenna technology, alongside its range of antenna components and Oxion AI-powered integration platform for RF projects, assists customers in selecting and integrating the appropriate Virtual Antenna chip to meet size, performance, and bill-of-materials requirements. With Oxion’s antenna integration platform, developers of ST87M01 can experiment with shortlisted antennas, apply best practices, and swiftly refine their designs for optimal performance.
DAOS offers optional support to ST customers throughout system development, encompassing hardware and software design to production, thereby accelerating time-to-market and harnessing the potential of the ST87M01 module in IoT initiatives. Their expertise streamlines integration and enhances performance, leading to the swift delivery of dependable solutions across various applications.
ST is set to showcase the ST87M01-1001 and ST87M01-1301 at Enlit Europe 2025 in Bilbao, Spain, from November 18-20, featuring four demonstrations at booth 1.B90: Utility-grade connected water meter; Smart street lighting with integrated MEMS sensors for real-time status monitoring; Asset tracking with GNSS and Wi-Fi positioning; ST87M01 module with ST4SIM-300 eSIM for secure and flexible connectivity.
