Bluetooth 6 SoC adds CAN-FD and channel sounding

Silicon Labs recently introduced the BG2B, a Bluetooth 6 SoC tailored for battery-operated IoT devices requiring secure ranging, minimal power consumption, and reduced external components. This SoC represents the company’s most energy-efficient Bluetooth LE component yet, featuring a dual-output DC-DC architecture and a multi-core design.

Compared to its predecessor, BG2B reduces MCU active current by 14-15%, lowers Bluetooth receive current, and decreases EM2 sleep current with RAM retention to 1.1 µA. This is particularly beneficial for devices like wireless sensors, asset tags, smart locks, and electronic shelf labels that operate in low-power modes.

In terms of location-based applications, BG2B offers support for Bluetooth Channel Sounding Mode 3, NADM, and Inline PCT, meeting the channel sounding specifications of Apple and Google. Silicon Labs provides a royalty-free ranging library and development tools to enhance the user experience.

As for integration, the SoC seamlessly combines Bluetooth LE with CAN-FD for wireless diagnostics in vehicles and industrial equipment without the need for a separate bridge device. Additionally, it integrates LED boost and four-channel LED sink drivers, dual 12-bit ADCs, and variable resistive load sensing for accurate battery health estimation, thereby reducing overall BOM costs and board space.

Security is a top priority, with features such as Secure Vault High ensuring PSA Level 3 compliance and alignment with EU Cyber Resilience Act requirements. Silicon Labs’ Custom Part Manufacturing Service allows for unique device identities and credentials to be provisioned during manufacturing.

The BG2B is now available through an early customer engagement program.
