Global financial institutions have successfully executed the initial triparty repo process using a tokenized U.S. Treasury on a prominent platform.
The recent transaction showcases the seamless integration of tokenized assets into institutional workflows, covering execution to financing.
Citadel Securities acquired a 2-year U.S. Treasury note through BNY on Tradeweb.
A digital representation of the security was registered on BNY’s private blockchain and settled within minutes, a significant improvement from the standard T+1 cycle.
The tokenized Treasury was then utilized as collateral in an overnight triparty repo, with BNY offering cash in exchange.
This groundbreaking trade signifies the inaugural use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform, advancing towards a more interconnected and efficient Treasury market.
BNY’s Chief Innovation & Market Transformation Officer, Carolyn Weinberg, emphasized the transformative potential of this development.
“This milestone transaction highlights the possibilities that arise when tokenized assets are incorporated into institutional workflows. By leveraging tokenized U.S. Treasuries for both settlement and financing, we are fostering a more connected, streamlined, and always-available financial ecosystem.”
On the other hand, Citadel Securities’ Digital Assets Operations Lead, Dan Doherty, underscored the efficiency gains achieved through this innovative approach.
“Efficient movement of top-tier collateral is essential for the smooth functioning of markets. We are delighted to collaborate with BNY on a practical demonstration of how tokenized U.S. Treasuries can transition seamlessly from settlement to financing. By reducing friction throughout the trade lifecycle, such innovations have the potential to enhance the operational efficiency of institutional markets.”
BNY’s future plans include introducing digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities to support more efficient on-chain settlement and financing activities for their institutional clientele.
As of June 30th, 2026, BNY oversees $62.6 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration and $2.2 trillion in assets under management.
