One Data GmbH, a leading German software company, specializes in applied artificial intelligence (AI). With offices in Passau, Munich, Frankfurt, and Berlin, the company employs over 200 professionals and offers an innovative AI-powered Data Product Builder for data teams to unleash the full potential of their data.
Challenges Faced:
As One Data continued to grow, the demand for a hosted option from customers increased. In addition, the company recognized the need to enhance productivity for its solution engineers.
Julian Breiteneicher, tech lead IT infrastructure at One Data, explains: “Our solution engineers spend a significant amount of time connecting to various data sources to generate insights for clients. By providing them with a well-defined base configuration for demos and Proof of Value deployments, we can expedite project kick-off.”
Transitioning into a product-focused company, One Data aimed to safeguard customer data in production environments and ensure data availability for key collaboration applications like Microsoft 365, all while maintaining a competitive edge in speed.
Florian Schöpp, head of customer success at One Data GmbH, states: “To sustain our agility, we needed to standardize on top-notch cloud-native tools to support our business expansion.”
Embracing Kubernetes early on as a scalable solution, One Data initially used multiple backup tools for its Kubernetes clusters. However, as the company prepared to launch its hosted service on Kubernetes, the need for a unified data protection solution became apparent.
“We opted to consolidate our clusters and standardize on SUSE Rancher,” says Breiteneicher. “Subsequently, we sought a data protection solution that seamlessly integrates with Kubernetes to leverage the platform’s capabilities.”
The Solution:
To ensure seamless hosting services without compromising on customer service, One Data chose Veeam’s Kasten K10 to safeguard its Kubernetes environment.
The company was particularly impressed with K10’s native support for immutable backups, a crucial feature in defending customer data against cyber threats. Schöpp emphasizes: “Security remains paramount for us, and Kasten K10 enables us to protect our Kubernetes clusters effectively while ensuring backup consistency and integrity.”
One Data leverages K10’s deep integration with the Kubernetes stack to automate backup policies and streamline deployment workflows. The company also utilizes Kyverno, an open-source policy engine, to validate backup configurations and enforce security measures.
“With Kasten K10, we can ensure reliable backups through snapshots, ensuring data protection without downtime,” notes Breiteneicher. “This approach is efficient and allows us to store backups in a cost-effective, cloud-native object store.”
Besides protecting its collaboration environment with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, One Data backs up terabytes of data daily to Microsoft Azure, guaranteeing business continuity for its users.
With robust data protection in place, One Data can now focus on business expansion, increase productivity, and enhance cyber resilience.
The Results:
- Facilitates new business growth with reliable container backups for the hosted service.
“For production workload backups in our new offering, we required a stable and proven solution, which we found in Kasten K10,” states Breiteneicher.
- Enhances productivity for solution engineers by enabling quick deployment and reuse of pre-configured settings.
With fine-grained permissions and self-service features, users can customize backup policies and leverage application restore points.
- Improves resilience against cyber threats with a robust security architecture covering Kubernetes clusters and collaboration data.
“By implementing a hardened Kubernetes configuration, we enhance infrastructure security and cyber resilience,” adds Schöpp.
