T-Mobile Partners with Red Hat for Cloud Automation
T-Mobile has chosen Red Hat as its cloud automation partner to facilitate its shift towards software-defined networks. Red Hat will assist T-Mobile in implementing a cloud platform across its core network and far-edge operations, enabling the US carrier to enhance scalability, automation, and cost management.
The transition of telecom providers to cloud-native architectures is expected to bring about greater flexibility, cost efficiency, resource optimization, and improved network reliability. By adopting Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus, T-Mobile aims to establish a unified telco cloud that will streamline network automation, reduce operational complexity, and support the company’s emerging digital services.
Key Benefits of Cloud Implementation
The incorporation of Red Hat’s platform is anticipated to offer numerous advantages for T-Mobile, including:
– Cost reduction through infrastructure consolidation and automation, leading to more efficient resource utilization.
– Enhanced security and compliance by standardizing workload management, thereby mitigating risks associated with diverse network environments.
– Pre-validated certification of services enabling quicker deployment, simplified lifecycle management, and seamless integration of virtual network functions (VNFs), cloud-native network functions (CNFs), and IT applications.
– Scalability in hybrid multi-cloud environments to accommodate the evolving demands of the industry.
Fran Heeran, Red Hat’s vice president of global telecommunications, emphasized the telecom sector’s increasing requirement for cloud standardization and automation. He highlighted how OpenShift provides a robust foundation for managing network workloads and accelerating service delivery, offering a flexible, carrier-grade platform to meet current and future telecommunications needs.
Lori Ames, senior vice president of cloud, IP & transport technology at T-Mobile, outlined the company’s vision for its cloud transformation, centered on a versatile cloud infrastructure facilitating the transition from traditional telecom systems to a dynamic, technology-driven model. Through the adoption of cloud-native tools and automation, T-Mobile aims to enhance agility and customer connectivity.
Cloud Strategy Amid Network Changes
Red Hat confirmed that OpenShift supports hybrid multi-cloud environments, granting T-Mobile the desired flexibility. Cloud adoption is considered an essential component of telecom providers’ transition to software-defined networks.
In addition to its cloud endeavors, T-Mobile recently announced the commencement of phasing out its 2G network as part of a broader network modernization initiative, reallocating resources towards 5G and future connectivity technologies.
