Following the latest update, WhatsApp users can now benefit from passkey-secured backups for their conversations. WhatsApp has implemented passkey encryption for backups, ensuring improved security and ease of access to users’ data.
WhatsApp Introduces Passkey-Secured Backups Feature
As per a recent announcement, WhatsApp, which previously provided users with end-to-end encrypted backups, has taken a further step towards offering a safer digital environment for their conversations. The platform has commenced offering passkey-encrypted backups for users.
WhatsApp has been a favored messaging app for both personal and business communications. Despite the controversies surrounding privacy policies and practices from Meta – WhatsApp’s parent company – the app continues to be one of the most widely used chat apps globally due to its user-friendly features and simplicity.
The absence of secure chat backups for WhatsApp was a lingering concern for many users. However, in 2021, WhatsApp introduced end-to-end encrypted cloud backups for users. This feature required users to manage their backups with a password to their Backup Key Vault. While it enhanced security, it also added the burden of remembering/storing an additional password, the loss of which would result in the loss of access to WhatsApp backups.
With the recent introduction of passkey-secured backups, users can now easily access their WhatsApp backups using passkeys. This feature allows users to employ various security methods to protect their chat backups, such as biometric (face, fingerprint) lock, screen lock code, in addition to passwords, encryption keys, or passkeys.
This additional support for security options enables users to choose any security method to safeguard WhatsApp backups without the need for lengthy encryption keys. As mentioned in the announcement,
Now, with just a tap or a glance, the same security that protects your personal chats and calls on WhatsApp is applied to your chat backups so they are always safe, accessible, and private.
Passkey-Protected Backups Coming Soon
To utilize this feature, users simply need to navigate to: Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
WhatsApp has confirmed the gradual rollout of this feature over the next few weeks, ensuring its availability to both Android and iOS users alike.
In September, Signal, another popular messaging app and WhatsApp rival, also unveiled secure cloud backups for its users. The app implemented end-to-end encryption and passkey protection concurrently, presenting strong competition to WhatsApp in terms of security features.
