Situational Awareness has made a significant investment of $500 million in Source Foundry, a startup focused on developing innovative equipment to address bottlenecks in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
This week, the hedge fund injected an additional $400 million into the company, building upon its previous commitments, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
A spokesperson for Situational Awareness declined to comment on the matter.
Source Foundry was established last year by Stanford researchers Abdulmalik Obaid and Joe Burg and recently concluded a funding round with a valuation of $5 billion.
The company is focusing on extreme ultraviolet lithography tools, an area currently dominated by ASML from the Netherlands, to enhance the speed and reduce costs of producing AI accelerators in response to increasing demand.
Stephanie Zhan, a partner at Sequoia, remarked, “If you trace the AI supply chain upstream, from models to chips to the machines that manufacture them, each layer becomes increasingly critical and constrained. Source Foundry tackles the tightest bottleneck: tooling for semiconductor manufacturing, starting in lithography.”
Under the leadership of former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, Situational Awareness shifted its focus following losses on public AI-related stocks, leading to the sale of equities to Citadel.
Several US companies are also working on similar lithography innovations to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and enhance capacity for next-generation chips.
This move underscores the growing interest among investors in upstream semiconductor infrastructure as the demand for artificial intelligence workloads strains existing production lines.
