SpaceX Shares Slide, Erasing $87,200,000,000 From Elon Musk’s Wealth

SpaceX (SPCX) shares experienced a significant decline in value following the release of their initial public earnings data.

Elon Musk’s net worth took a hit, dropping from $783.3 billion to $696.1 billion, representing an 11.01% decrease and erasing $87.2 billion from the tech mogul’s overall wealth as SPCX plummeted, as reported by Benzinga.

Following SpaceX’s highly anticipated public listing on June 12th, where it debuted at $150 after an initial public offering price of $135, Musk briefly became the world’s first trillionaire. SPCX reached a high of $160.95 on the same day, eventually closing at $201.80 on June 16th.

However, by August 5th, SPCX shares experienced a sharp decline, falling to $108.29, marking a more than 40% drop from its peak in June and leading to a decrease of over 30% in Musk’s overall wealth to mirror the stock’s post-IPO decline.

The sell-off occurred after SpaceX released its first quarterly report as a public company. Despite a 92% increase in Q2 revenue to $7.8 billion, the firm reported a $541 million net loss alongside $18.4 billion in capital expenditures.

Significantly, $15.8 billion of the expenditure was directed towards artificial intelligence infrastructure, which impacted investor confidence in the firm’s near-term profitability.

Analysts highlight that the continuous high investment requirements in growth sectors are putting pressure on valuations, despite strong revenue growth. As of the latest closing on Wednesday, SPCX was trading at $108.27.
