BitMEX opens fund recovery to customers it previously barred from the platform

BitMEX has now allowed customers in previously restricted jurisdictions to withdraw their funds after ceasing operations. Users in the United States, Canada, Hong Kong SAR, Bermuda, Seychelles, and Myanmar can now access their accounts, complete necessary verification, and withdraw their remaining balances. These markets were previously restricted, but the company has lifted these restrictions temporarily to assist customers in recovering their funds.

Former customers who were unable to access their accounts due to their location can now sign in, complete the required checks, and submit withdrawal requests. Customers who still face issues accessing their accounts are advised to contact BitMEX support for assistance.

It is important to note that customers in sanctioned regions such as Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and certain Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine are still restricted from accessing their accounts. Withdrawals from these accounts are subject to compliance checks rather than a broad reopening like the six previously restricted markets.

BitMEX has also outlined specific exceptions for Iranian nationals living outside Iran and Russian nationals residing in the EU or Switzerland to apply for access under certain conditions. Withdrawals are still monitored, and users are encouraged to complete their withdrawals promptly to avoid account charges as the wind-down process continues.

Founded in 2014, BitMEX was a significant player in the crypto derivatives market but faced regulatory challenges in its later years. Despite its success, the exchange pleaded guilty to violating the US Bank Secrecy Act in 2024 and paid substantial penalties. The founders were pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2025.
