Cisco sets its sights on quantum data centres

Cisco is at the forefront of quantum technology, focusing on practical applications in quantum networks and data centers. Recently, at the Quantum Summit 2024, Cisco gathered industry experts to discuss breakthroughs in quantum networking, security, and the future of quantum data centers.

The vision for Cisco’s quantum data center involves a facility capable of handling multiple quantum circuits with dynamic network interconnections and a variety of entanglement protocols. Traditional approaches to scaling quantum computers are deemed impractical with current technology, leading Cisco to propose networking smaller quantum computers within a centralized data center. This quantum data center would connect numerous processors in a controlled environment, offering quantum computing as a scalable service.

Cisco’s concept includes connecting quantum computers over classic LAN models and fiber links within the data center, enabling high-speed transmission of quantum bits and the integration of IoT devices for a distributed sensing network. Utilizing existing fiber infrastructure for quantum entanglement is a key aspect of Cisco’s approach.

The core of Cisco’s quantum network fabric, QFabric, is designed to support reliable, high-speed quantum connections. It will facilitate the smooth transmission of entangled photons between devices, supporting various entanglement modes while ensuring secure, seamless connectivity. Security is a top priority for Cisco, with QFabric incorporating quantum key distribution (QKD) capabilities for secure key sharing and a hybrid key management system combining QKD with post-quantum cryptography.

In addition to hardware development, Cisco is working on Quantum Orchestra, a software package that manages entanglement, routing, and resource allocation in the quantum network. By optimizing network performance and task assignment based on topology and device distribution, Quantum Orchestra aims to improve efficiency.

While much of the development has been in simulation, Cisco plans to publish its findings soon, showcasing the transformative potential of quantum networks for industries requiring secure, high-speed computing.
