Robinhood Chain just ran into two problems at once

Robinhood Chain faced dual challenges on Sept. 4, with a temporary block production halt coinciding with AMC’s opposition to its Stock Token business. The Ethereum layer-2 network experienced a 14-minute block production pause, impacting transactions before normalcy resumed. Robinhood did not disclose the cause of the interruption publicly.

The outage occurred around two months after the network’s mainnet launch, amidst its rapid growth. Robinhood Chain has emerged as one of the most profitable networks in the crypto space, with approximately $23 million in total fees and a recent $4 million in daily revenue. This surge in revenue positions Robinhood Chain to potentially generate around $1.7 billion annually, showcasing its rapid expansion.

In addition to transaction fees, DeFi activity on Robinhood Chain has surged, with total value locked reaching $840 million and decentralized exchange activity increasing. The network’s revenue streams extend beyond fees, with potential earnings from USDG economics and increased trading revenue due to rising assets under management.

However, the network’s growth has attracted scrutiny, especially regarding its Stock Token business. AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron criticized Robinhood for offering a token linked to his company’s shares on the network without consent, raising legal concerns. Despite the backlash, Robinhood has defended its decision to continue trading the AMC token.

The dispute underscores the challenges Robinhood faces as it introduces traditional financial products onto its network. Stock Tokens, which provide exposure to real-world assets, have become popular among users, despite resistance from some companies being referenced. The network’s expansion in this area has not been deterred by corporate objections.

As Robinhood Chain navigates these obstacles, it must prove its ability to support the growing financial activity on its platform. With Stock Tokens gaining traction and user migration increasing, the network’s infrastructure will be tested to accommodate the evolving demands of its expanding ecosystem.
