Ethereum open interest rose in ETH as Binance value fell

Ethereum open interest in Binance’s ETHUSDT futures contract saw a 2.27% increase in ETH quantity over the last 48 hours, despite a 6.58% decrease in its USDT value on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Open interest measures the outstanding futures exposure, allowing traders to assess the exposure remaining through price fluctuations. The distinction between changes in exposure quantity and changes in valuation is crucial for understanding the overall impact on the market.

In contrast, Bitcoin’s futures book showed a similar trend but with different numbers. Binance’s BTCUSDT open interest fell by 1.45% in BTC units, while the USDT value declined by 5.97%. Most of the value decline was due to repricing under the accounting method used.

Both Ethereum and Bitcoin open interest quantities contracted on Oct. 8. From midnight to 21:00 UTC, ETH-denominated exposure fell by 2.85%, and BTC-denominated exposure fell by 3.03%.

The hourly records for ETHUSDT showed a rise in open interest from 2,279,556 ETH to 2,331,355 ETH, while its value decreased from approximately 6.175 billion USDT to 5.768 billion USDT. On the other hand, the BTCUSDT records indicated a decline in quantity from 94,297 BTC to 92,927 BTC, with the value falling from approximately 8.083 billion USDT to 7.6 billion USDT.

The comparison between the two contracts from Oct. 6 to Oct. 8 revealed percentage changes in coin quantity and USDT value. Ethereum’s open interest saw an increase in coin quantity by 2.27% but a decrease in USDT value by 6.58%, resulting in an overall implied valuation change of -8.65%. Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s open interest experienced a decrease in both coin quantity and USDT value, leading to an implied valuation change of -4.59%.
