Freedom Factory Launches dGEN1, the Ethereum-Powered Smartphone

The competition to bring Web3 to your pocket is intensifying. With the recent release of Solana’s Seeker phone, Freedom Factory has now started shipping dGEN1, the world’s first Ethereum-native smartphone designed for a completely onchain lifestyle.

Priced at $549, the device operates on ethOS v4, a customized operating system specifically tailored for Ethereum. Unlike conventional smartphones, the dGEN1 focuses less on calls and more on smart contracts. It features a hardware wallet integrated directly into its chip and operates without relying on centralized app stores or intermediaries.
“The dGEN1 isn’t intended to replace your iPhone — it’s meant to eliminate your dependence on centralized systems. It’s your on-chain companion.”

Markus Haas, CEO & Co-creator at Freedom Factory
Every aspect of the dGEN1 experience revolves around blockchain interaction. From biometric signing and local transaction decoding to account abstraction (ERC-4337) and gasless transactions via built-in paymasters, the device brings full Web3 functionality in a sleek, portable package.

Users can access decentralized apps like Camelot (Arbitrum’s top DEX), Inky by Kraken, Huddle01, Towns, and Fungi, as well as play Web3-native games like Dot and Yuliverse — all through the phone’s decentralized app store.

The phone’s Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) ensures that private keys remain on the device, providing hardware-level security for crypto assets. While primarily Wi-Fi enabled, users can opt for cellular service via SIM or eSIM for complete connectivity.

Vitalik’s Support and Ethereum’s Ecosystem Backing

As per Arkham data, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin personally contributed 199.9 ETH (≈$517,000) to Freedom Factory’s Gnosis Safe wallet in support of ethOS development. The project also boasts supporters such as Balaji Srinivasan, NounsDAO, and the Optimism Foundation — indicating that Ethereum’s leading figures are endorsing the next wave of decentralized hardware.

The dGEN1 joins a growing market of blockchain-native devices that aim to merge finance, identity, and communication into a single on-chain hub. Solana’s Seeker phone, which was launched in August, sold 150,000 units across 50 countries in its initial pre-order phase, demonstrating global demand for decentralized smartphones.

However, Freedom Factory’s approach prioritizes functionality over novelty. The dGEN1 is not designed to replace everyday smartphones — it is a Web3 workstation in your pocket. It connects Ethereum’s vast ecosystem of wallets, DAOs, and DeFi protocols while maintaining self-custody and privacy.

A Glimpse Into the Future of Personal Finance

In the Web3 era, smartphone competition no longer revolves around camera quality or processors — it centers on keys, control, and connectivity. With the dGEN1, Ethereum enters the race to make crypto-native computing as mobile as messaging.

In a landscape where Solana, Sui, and XProtocol are already introducing their own devices, Freedom Factory’s Ethereum-first hardware establishes itself as a formidable player in the emerging decentralized mobile ecosystem.

As Web3 adoption deepens, the next billion users may not simply download Web3 — they may unbox it.
