Microsoft reaches truce with cloud providers, ending EU antitrust dispute

Microsoft and cloud providers have reached a settlement after a lengthy dispute over licensing practices. The agreement, brokered with the cloud association CISPE, aims to resolve an antitrust complaint filed against Microsoft by EU regulators. CISPE’s Secretary General expressed optimism about the agreement, believing it will create a level playing field for European cloud infrastructure service providers.

As part of the settlement, Microsoft will adjust some of its software licensing practices within nine months and make a lump sum payment to CISPE. However, Amazon will not benefit from these terms. While Microsoft welcomed the resolution, Amazon criticized it for offering limited concessions.

This settlement follows similar agreements Microsoft made with other cloud companies to resolve antitrust complaints. The resolution comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny of Microsoft in Europe, including investigations into its cloud services and allegations of violating EU antitrust rules.

Despite efforts to address concerns, the European Commission remains vigilant, prompting Microsoft to make further changes to address competition concerns. The ongoing regulatory pressure extends beyond the cloud services dispute, as authorities are examining Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI.

While the resolution marks progress for Microsoft in addressing antitrust concerns in Europe, the company still faces scrutiny on multiple fronts. The complex regulatory environment for tech giants underscores the challenges they face in the EU and globally.
