VPN usage is on the rise as authoritarian restrictions against VPNs increase. ProtonVPN has introduced new features to help its users navigate these challenges. The latest update allows Android users to hide their VPN use by replacing the app icon with discreet icons. Additionally, ProtonVPN has launched a new Stealth protocol to bypass censorship.
ProtonVPN Introduces Discreet Icons for Android
ProtonVPN now offers Android users the option to conceal the presence of the VPN on their devices by using discreet icons. These new ‘Discreet Icons’ provide alternative graphics and app names to disguise the VPN app as other common applications like a Weather app, Note-taking app, or Calculator.
This update is particularly beneficial for users in authoritarian regimes who may face consequences if caught using a VPN. By changing the app icon, users can avoid detection during physical inspections of their devices.
While this feature does not completely hide the VPN from settings, it can help users avoid immediate detection. Users can also disable VPN app notifications as an extra precaution.
Currently, this feature is only available for Android devices, with no clear timeline for availability on Apple devices.
ProtonVPN Introduces ‘Stealth’ Protocol
In addition to discreet icons, ProtonVPN has launched its proprietary ‘Stealth’ protocol to assist VPN users in restrictive regions. This new protocol is designed to evade Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology used by governments to block VPNs while maintaining connection speeds.
The Stealth protocol is included in all ProtonVPN plans, including the free tier, and is available on various platforms like Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android (excluding Linux for now).
While ProtonVPN is not the first to offer an exclusive VPN protocol, their Stealth protocol adds another option for users seeking secure and private browsing. Share your thoughts in the comments below.
